Dr. Cassandra L. Thiel is an internationally recognized researcher in healthcare sustainability and the founder of Clinically Sustainable Consulting. At NYU Langone Health — and previously at the University of Pittsburgh — she has spent more than a decade using life cycle assessment (LCA) to measure the environmental footprint of healthcare: individual surgical procedures, disposable supplies and custom packs, hospital inpatient care, and entire clinical specialties.
Her research has been published in leading medical and environmental journals, including JAMA, Health Affairs, Environmental Science & Technology and the American Journal of Public Health. She is a Fulbright Scholar, and her research includes high-quality, low-impact care models such as India’s Aravind Eye Care System.
Dr. Thiel founded Clinically Sustainable Consulting to bring that research rigor directly to the organizations that can change how healthcare is delivered — medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturers, health systems, and industry associations. Clients work with her for methods that stand up to scrutiny, deep connections across the health sector, and her ability to explain complex results to executives, engineers, sales teams and clinicians alike.
She co-founded the Sustainable Healthcare Leadership Institute with Columbia University’s Global Consortium on Climate and Health Education, leads the LCA Bootcamp for health-sector professionals, and is a sought-after keynote speaker. Her work has been recognized with the Women in Sustainability Leadership Award and the ACLCA Education Leadership Award.
